Step-by-step guide to downloading your Chase bank transaction history into Excel. Covers date ranges, file types, the 1,000-row limit, and what to do when Chase's export falls short.
If you need to download your Chase transaction history into an Excel spreadsheet, Chase offers a built-in export on their website. This guide walks through every step, explains the limitations you will hit, and shows how to get your Chase bank statement data into Excel when the built-in export is not enough.

Why Download Chase Transactions as a Spreadsheet?
There are several reasons you might need your Chase transactions in Excel:
- Bookkeeping: Your accountant or bookkeeper needs recent transactions in a format they can import into QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage.
- Tax preparation: Categorizing a year of spending is far easier in a spreadsheet than scrolling through the Chase app.
- Expense tracking: Personal budgets and business expense reports both benefit from sortable, filterable transaction data.
- Loan applications: Some lenders ask for bank statements in spreadsheet format as part of the application process.
Step-by-Step: Exporting from Chase Online Banking
1. Use a Desktop Browser
You must use a desktop computer for this. Chase's mobile app does not support downloading transaction spreadsheets. Only the chase.com website offers the export feature.
2. Select Your Account
Log into your Chase account at chase.com. Click the Accounts button in the top-left corner. You will see all your Chase accounts listed: checking, savings, credit cards, and business accounts. Click on the account you want to export transactions from.
3. Click the Download Button
Once you are viewing your account transactions, look for the download arrow button above the transaction list. Click it to open the export dialog.
4. Configure the Export
You need to fill out three fields:
- Account: Select the account if you have multiple Chase accounts.
- File Type: By default this is Excel (
.xls). If your bookkeeper uses QuickBooks or Quicken, you can select those formats instead. See our guide on converting statements for bookkeeping software for format details. - Date Range: Click to choose your start and end dates. You can go back up to 24 months from today.
5. Download
Click Download and you will see a confirmation with a green checkmark. The file saves to your default downloads folder.
What the Spreadsheet Looks Like
The exported Excel file contains columns for:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Credit or Debit | Whether the transaction was incoming or outgoing |
| Posting Date | The date Chase processed the transaction |
| Description | Merchant name or transaction description |
| Ending Balance | Account balance after this transaction |
| Check Number | Populated only for deposited checks |
The data is clean and ready to sort, filter, or import into accounting software.
Limitations of Chase's Built-In Export
24-Month Maximum
Chase only lets you download transactions from the past 24 months. If you need older data, you have to work with PDF statements instead. We cover how to handle those in our Chase PDF to Excel guide.
1,000-Row Limit Per Download
Each export is capped at 1,000 transactions. If you have more than that in your selected date range, you need to split the download into smaller time periods.
For example, if you had 2,000 transactions over a year, you would download six months at a time. If one half of the year had especially heavy activity, you might need to split it further into three-month chunks. High-volume businesses like restaurants with hundreds of daily transactions will need to export in very small date ranges.
No Full Statement Details
Chase's export gives you basic transaction data, but it does not include everything that appears on the official PDF statement, such as detailed merchant categories, rewards information, or account summaries.
If you need the complete picture, converting the PDF statement gives you all the details Chase recorded.
When You Need More Than Chase Offers
For transactions older than 24 months, you need to download the PDF statement from Chase and extract the data from there. Manually retyping transaction data from a PDF is tedious and error-prone.
Our Bank Statement Converter handles this automatically. Upload your Chase PDF statement and get back a clean Excel file with all transactions properly extracted: dates, descriptions, amounts, and balances in separate columns. It works with all Chase account types including Total Checking, Savings, Sapphire, Freedom, Ink, and business accounts.
The converter processes a statement in about 30 seconds with 99.9% accuracy. For context, generic PDF tools typically achieve 60-85% accuracy on bank statements and require significant manual cleanup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download Chase transactions on my phone? No. The transaction download feature is only available on the Chase website using a desktop browser. The Chase mobile app does not support spreadsheet exports.
How far back can I download Chase transactions? Through the website export, you can go back 24 months. For older transactions, download the PDF statement from Chase and use a bank statement converter to extract the data into Excel.
What file formats does Chase offer for export?
Chase supports Excel (.xls), CSV, Quicken (.qfx), and QuickBooks (.qbo) formats.
Why is my Chase download missing transactions? Chase caps each download at 1,000 rows. If your date range includes more than 1,000 transactions, narrow the date range and download in multiple batches.
Can I download Chase credit card transactions too? Yes. The same process works for all Chase accounts: checking, savings, and credit cards including Sapphire, Freedom, and Ink.
